Mrs. Joseph Bower (nee Mary Ann Huntington). Resident of Kemptville 90 years.

Aged over four score years and ten and remaining bright and active almost until the very last, Mrs. Joseph Bower passed away early o the morning of Tuesday, 1st inst. and another link with the past of our community's life was broken. The late Mrs. Bower was a remarkable woman, physically and mentally, and came of a remarkable race. She was the daughter of the late Dr. Silas Huntington and of his wife, Mary Adams. Her grandfather, Major Samuel Adams, distinguished himself as a special officer detailed for dispatch-bearing during the American Revolutionary war, coming to Canada with other United Empire Loyalists whose devotion to the British cause had cost them dearly. Major Adams himself was forced to abandon large estates at Saratoga Springs in N.Y. State, where his family was one of great influence. In the War of 1812, Major Adams served the British cause faithfully, winning particular distinction at the Battle of Crysler's Farm for which he received large grants from the Crown, in the Townships of Oxford and Edwardsburg.

The Adams and Huntington families have many branches extant in Grenville County. Dr. Huntington, father of the late Mrs. Bower, was a life-long resident of the district, removing to Kemptville in 1820 and subsequently residing on Prescott Street where the Bank of Ottawa now stands. Mrs. Bower was united in marriage in early life to the late Joseph Bower, Esquire, who came to Kemptville in 1835 from South Gower Township and who became the great Merchant King of the village in early days. The late Mr. Bower was a farmer's son, born on the fourth concession of South Gower, near the Mountain Line. Coming to Kemptville, he entered the employ of Beaumont & Henderson and subsequently worked for Averell & Hooker.

In 1837, Mr. Bower started a business for himself in a small frame building on Clothier Street, which was for years known as "the Red Row" and which remained standing until quite recently - an interesting relic of pioneer days. The building provided him shop, show-rooms, warehouse and dwelling for many years, until in 1850 he moved into a stone building formerly occupied by Beaumont & Henderson. He did a very successful business and rapidly acquired property. In 1859, he built the large brick block on the corner of Clothier and Henry Street, which was for three decades the commercial emporium of this locality and which is now known as the I.O.O.F. Hall. Mr. Bower also owned a distillery managed by Mr. Wm. MacGregor, and controlled several farms and minor business ventures, all of which seem to have been equally successful financially. He built a very fine residence, which is now occupied by his daughter, Mrs. Laing, with whom Mrs. Bower made her home up to the time of her demise.

To Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Bower were born eleven children, of whom ten reached mature years: Mrs. James Porter, of Powassan, Ont.; Mr. Wm. Bower, deceased but survived by a widow who lives in Toronto; Mr. S. H. Bower, of Brandon; Mrs. A. Blackburn, of Toronto; Dr. Silas J. Bower, of Waddington, N.Y.; Mr. Harvey Bower, deceased, whose widow resides in Morrisburg; Mrs. H Laing, of Kemptville; Mr. Charles Bower, of Brandon; Mrs. Carrie MacGregor, of Toronto; Mr. Gideon Bower, of Vancouver. Deceased is also survived by thirty-six grandchildren and thirty-one great-grandchildren. In Mrs. Bower's declining years, she was tenderly cared for by her daughter, Mrs. Laing, until death came, peacefully on the early morning of the date mentioned. At the time of writing funeral arrangements have not yet been made, pending the arrival of relatives from a distance. 20
