Memorable Manitobans : Orest Stephen Roscoe (1932-2016)
Educator, engineer.
Born at Melrose, Alberta on 28 April 1932, son of Stephen Roscoe (1907-1993) and Mary Roscoe (c1906-1996), he attended the Central Normal School . His brief teaching career included tenure as the Principal of New Rosewell School (1951-1952) in North Kildonan before going on to earn a Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Manitoba . He moved to Ontario and worked for four decades in satellite communications. On 27 June 1959, he married Evelyn Joen Bower at St. John's Church in Richmond, Ontario and they had three children. He died at Nepean, Ontario on 6 May 2016.

With profound sadness we announce the peaceful and unexpected passing of Orest at the age of 84 on Friday, May 6, 2016, surrounded by family. Beloved husband of Joan (nee Bower) for 57 years. Loving father of Robin (Ian), Stephen (Lucy) and David (Diane). Proud and cherished grandfather of Mike, Christine, Scott, Johnathan, Alina, Alex and Fiona. He will be sadly missed by his brothers Ray (Diane) and Al (Ann), his many nieces and nephews as well as friends here and around the world. Orest attended the University of Manitoba, earning a Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering, and for forty years contributed greatly to Canada's renown as a leader in Satellite Communications. His work took him around the world which included living in Norway and Japan. Orest always said that growing up on a farm was the best education because it taught you to find solutions. In his spare time he enjoyed curling, skiing, golfing, reading, gardening and building. Orest was a kind and gentle man who gave of himself to his family, community and church, volunteering countless hours, thankful for his many blessings. Friends may call at Garden Chapel of Tubman Funeral Homes, 3440 Richmond Road, Nepean, on Friday, May 13 from 2 '96 4 pm and 7 '96 9 pm. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, May 14 at Christ Church Anglican, Bells Corners, 3861 Old Richmond Road at 11am, followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to Christ Church Bells Corners or the Heart and Stroke Foundation. 2
